He began his career performing art rock before moving towards a more pop-oriented style. He has achieved several top 40 singles in the United Kingdom and two in the United States, and has been particularly successful in countries such as Norway and Brazil. His songs "A Spaceman Came Travelling" (1975) and "The Lady in Red" (1986) are among his best known works.

my French wife who was dying of breast cancer came to me one afternoon in a red dress and as your song says she looked amazing and absolutely beautiful. She passed away in 1996 but everytime I hear your song I think her her and I still get emotional hearing it and I will never forget this wonderful that brings a tear to my eyes. Thank you for writting and singing probably the only song in my life that I can remember. I am now age 86........Thanks again

I know no one will care about this comment but that’s ok. My mom passed last year. She was gorgeous when she was younger. I’ll never forget how she told me that a tribute band once sang this song JUST FOR HER. She was in some bar in her early 40’s wearing a red dress and the lead singer noticed her and specifically sang this song just for her. My mom was truly gorgeous inside and out. I miss you mom. I love you ❤️
